Elder Fae

???
The Elder Fae are a species of parasitic, predatory beasts that seemingly possess human-like intelligence, or perhaps greater.
They often take a form similar to that of Fairfolk (their preferred prey), though it's not always perfectly accurate.
They are well known for being tricksters, horrific monsters, and historic scourges of Fae populations, though their prey is not limited to the Fae.
It's not known exactly how many Elder Fae exist, though in Tannal a few "families" are known to appear from time to time, most notably "The Fall Court", which consists of four known Elder Fae at this time; Mother, The Briar Lord, Song of the Forest, and Voice Of The Wind.
The Elder Fae abide by a strict set of rules, seemingly imposed socially and through their magical nature. They cannot harm you unless they are given the ability/opportunity to do so, which can be given through tresspassing through their territory, giving your name/identity, losing a bet or a game against one, or by intentionally provoking it. Most living creatures have a sort of veil that protects them from the supernatural, but giving an Elder Fae your name completely removes this veil, leaving you entirely exposed.
Elder Fae do not have any average size or appearance, and certainly no known lifespan. They are also not related to "true" Fae at all, simply having a similar appearance. However, it is known that they do repopulate rather than simply appearing, which is done through a parasitic process.
Typically, the Mother Fae will find a suitable host before her metamorphosis, and then implant a fae larva into the living host, which the larva will then devour from inside as it grows, and eventually take the shape of the original host. However, this process is not perfect, leaving an awkward "teenage" stage where the host body is very clearly no longer living. This stage of growth is attributed as the source of many Vampire myths.
However, even when the Elder Fae has grown into a young adult, their form is not perfect. They do not understand the concept of clothing, often leading to "clothing" that appears to meld into the body rather than sitting on top.
When an Elder Fae is ready to reach maturity, it undergoes a final process known as Metamorphosis. Female Elder Fae will implant a larva into a host to create offspring that will care for them in their mature form, whereas Male Elder Fae seem to simply stay in the Young Adult form for their entire lives.
Once ready for metamorphosis, it reforms its body using drawn magic from the world. This often creates "magical cold spots" in the world, large areas where magic does not function. When the metamorphosis is complete, the Elder Fae is no longer comprehendable by those still within the veil. Not unspeakable, not "drive-you-insane scary", simply incomprehensible; like a blank spot in space, like trying to look at something through the back of your skull.
Those without the Veil do not survive witnessing a Mature Elder Fae.
